Annalakshmi

Heard of Annalakshmi? If you have yet to heard of it, then read on to find out more!

Annalakshmi is a unique restaurant of its kind. It is quite different from several conventional eating outlets. Firstly, the principal motive is service and not profit. Annalakshmi was not established as a business venture competing with others to make profit in a stipulated time. It is run largely by volunteer staff who joyfully serve in an assortment of restaurant activities; cooking, serving, setting & clearing tables, dish washing, taking orders, transporting etc. They do not “work” for “shift hours” just to make a living. They volunteer and dedicate their time because they find joy in the underlying philosophy of serve, love and give. Dining at Annalakshmi means choosing food from a menu without a price. Eat what you want and give as you feel. (Still don't get it?) In simpler terms, you are free to pay whatever amount that you like regardless of the amount you eat. ( Saying so, it does not mean that it is a place for us to eat "cheap" food. I strongly believe that we have to respect Annalakshmi's culture and belief in their customers to pay a decent price for the food consume. )

After the brief introduction of Annalakshmi, now do allow me to share my dining experience with you. I decided to drop by at one of the restaurant located at the basement of Chinatown Point after much recommendation. Initially I was quite skeptical about the concept of "Eat what you want and give as you free". I was sure that the food and service must be really bad, and the place must be really run-down in order for any restaurant to make such claims. However, to my surprise, it is totally different from what I envisage it to be. The first thing anyone would noticed about the restaurant would be the grand entrance that makes you want to break through it to unveil the secret within. When I push opened the door, the interior design blown me away. You really have to see it to believe it. The place is filled with rich Indian culture and there are beautiful ornaments at all corners of the restaurant. Even the walls look fantastic with embellishment in the shade of red and gold.

Unfortunately, they no longer serve buffet style, orders have to be make by ala-carte. This prove to be rather difficult for me, as I have no idea how most of the food in the menu look like despite the short english descriptions stated in the menu. Fortunately, the service staff are really polite and helpful. I must say that I will give them 2 thumbs up plus 10 toes up for their prompt and personalise service attitude. As for the food, it turn up aright. Though, personally I tend to crave for some meat throughout my meal. (heez, I am a strict omnivores).

For potatoes lover, do try their Aloo Jeera (Boiled potato tossed with jeera and spices) and Masala Posal (Dosai filled with spice potatoes). However, the 2 items that are a "MUST TRY" are the Gobi Manchurian (Cauliflower fritters cooked in a spicy sauce) and Annalakshmi Special (Rice cooked with vegetables, raisins, nuts and spices.) Yummy! Trust me as I am someone who is rather picky with food.

Hungry?!

Look out for the below pictures:

Gobi Manchurian (Cauliflower fritters cooked in a spicy sauce)

Aloo Jeera (Boiled potato tossed with jeera and spices)

I hope the 2 pictures did not make any of you feel disgusted about the food. I know its kind of messy as I can't help but dig into the food once it's being served. Therefore I only remember to take a photo of it halfway through the meal. Lol. The other dishes were already in my tummy before my mind can react. I am sure it wouldn't be appeitzing for you to witness the empty bowls of the other dishes that are practically being slurp down by me!

To end off today entry. Let me share with you some of the photo that I took while strolling through the street of Chinatown today. They are some of the few photo that give me a nostalgic feel of those days where I used to hold my Mummy hands to look for New Year clothes at the shops located above the food centres.

The night street at Chinatown which used to bustle with human traffic

The place where most of us have been to as a child. A place that holds many memories!

Dedicated to all Daddy

Below is an extract of an email sent to me by my friend Huai Yu and it touched my heart and I know it will do to your too!!

An 80 year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45 years old highly educated son.Suddenly a crow perched on their window. The Father asked his Son, "What is this?" The Son replied "It is a crow".After a few minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, "What is this?"The Son said "Father, I have just now told you "It's a crow". After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time, What is this?At this time some expression of irritation was felt in the Son's tone when he said to hisFather with a rebuff.."It's a crow, a crow".

A little after, the Father again asked his Son the 4th time, "What is this?"This time the Son shouted at his Father,"Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times 'IT IS A CROW'. Are you not able to understand this?"

A little while later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born. On opening a page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary :-"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My Son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23 times.I did not at all feel irritated I rather felt affection for my innocent child". While the little child asked him 23 times "What is this", the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and When today the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son felt irritated and annoyed.

So..

If your parents attain old age, do not repulse them or look at them as a burden, but speak to them a gracious word, be cool, obedient, humble and be kind to them. Be considerate to your parents. With this I will like to end this entry with a rather interesting picture that I came across:

Nonetheless, I still love my Daddy so!

Lunch at Spageddies

Hi Peeps! I am Pei Ling aka Roly-Poly and I will be taking over Munchies for today blog. I will be filling you in with my friend (Esther) 21st birthday celebration that took place today.

Lunch was at Spageddies located in Paragon B1. Some of the yummy desserts we have include:

Tiramisu (Rating: 2.5/5)
Roly-Poly>> Its too creamy. Though coffee taste is aromatic. Definitely room for improvement.

Brownies with vanilla ice-cream (Rating: 3.5/5)
Roly-Poly>>Brownies serves warm and is kind of chewy and I love it though some other might prefer it to be more spongy. Strong chocolaty taste that makes you tempted to take one bite after another! For anti-nut consumers, do try their chocolate fudge cake with ice-cream. It's even better!! (Rating: 4/5)

Ambience (Rating: 3.5/5)
Roly-Poly>>The restaurant offers a setting that is both distinctive and diverting. The spacious interior is dressed in the decidedly Italian tones of terra cotta, deep green and creamy white. It's like being in a "trattoria Italiano" complete with Italian billboards, festive lighting and sundried peppers.

Pricing (Rating: 3/5)
Roly-Poly>> Pricing is relatively reasonable with main course ranging from the price of $11.90 to ard $30+++ Drink starts from ard $3.90. Average check per person is around $26 inclusive of main course and soft drink. Do check out their website for promotion exclusively for certain credit cards holders.

Menu choice (Rating: 3/5)
Roly-Poly>> Menu includes entree such as platter which include soft shell crabs, calamari and cheese chicken stick that come with tomato salsa sauce and tata sauce. Of course, menu includes other "must have" italian signature items such as pizza and pasta. For beverage choice, there are soft drinks to juices to italian soda even to alcholic beverages like margarita.

Portion Size (Rating: 2/5)
Roly-Poly>> I was kind of disappointed with the portion served. The food served look totally different to the pictures protray in the menu. For my tenderloin and clayfish pasta set ordered, my tenderloin seems to shrink like a deflated balloon with the size of (7cm x 6cm x 1cm) and my 2 clayfish with their shells removed resemble the size of 2 miserable fishballs!! The only thing that is bigger in portion compared to the picture in the menu is the pasta!!! (Should I be impressed?) Fortunately, the desserts look normal. Phew! Since desserts signify the end of a meal (usually serve to spoil the whole meal or to revert the situation), it manages to add back a few crucial points for Spageddies.

Overall "Must Try"?? (Rating: 3/5)
Roly-Poly>>Yes why not! Ambience and chocolate fudge cake with vanilla ice cream alone score a few critical points!

Miss Chiquita in the 1940s

I recall the days when Grandpa used to tell me about some of the really good commercials that leave a deep impression in him. He used to tell me how charming and talented Miss Chiquita is. In the early 1940s, Miss Chiquita was born, starring in several commercials. These commercials were being produced by Famous Studio. Several of the incidental characters appear to have been designed by Dave Tendlar. They are pretty elaborate by Famous Studios standards. Some of the titles include: Chiquita Banana and the Cannibals, Chiquita Banana's Magic, Chiquita Banana's School For Brides and Chiquita Banana's Beauty Treatment. Without further ado, lets sit back and enjoy one of the really good commercial starring Miss Chiquita!!

Filmography: Chiquita Banana Theatrical Commercials

Produced by Disney Studios in the 40's, this commercial appeared only in movie theaters, and for over 50 years kept us humming its catchy tune.

If the above commercial fails to quench your thirst for Miss Chiquita, let us take a peek at some of the clips below taken from the other fêted commercials!

Growl! Argh! I always gets hungry at the sight of Miss Chiquita. Guess it's time for my date with Miss Chiquita. (healthy snack time for me!)

Opening of Munchies-Roly-Poly!

Hi Peeps!

First let me introduce to you the host for munchies-roly-poly. It's none other than Munchies the ape!

Munchies claims that he has tasted the most scrumptious banana in the world and aims to conquer other lip-smacking food. Beside food, he also enjoys a good dosages of natural Vitamin D. (That explain his hunky tan!) And yes! He never forget to keep himself tidy and trim (with his manly mane, did I mentioned mane?), as keeping himself presentable is an important aspect of everyday life since he will be expecting to meet more and more delightful readers like yourself. Munchies will love to share his wonderful tips on being charming, active and most importantly staying roly-poly with all beings that breathe. (though sometime, Munchies tries too hard to share his life experiences with Dolly the Barbie! Why just couldn't he get it?)

Stay tune to munchies-roly-poly as Munchies goes around taking snap shots of nitty-gritty events that take place in an island known as Singapore. (If Munchies manages to save up enough banana to barter for an express elephant ride by Tarzan out of Singapore, do not worry, Munchies will not forget to snap some enthralling shots to share with us too.) At the same time , Munchies will also share some of the interesting or heart warming events that he might come across each day. So look out for new entries being pen at munchies-roly-poly!
